Want to explore a different side of Antwerp? Visit the Antwerp Canals and you'll be setting off on a unique underground walk through the city's former canals and sewers. It is an adventure experience that combines history, secrets and unexpected views.
Secrets under the city
'Ruien' (sewers), 'vlieten' (channels) and 'vesten' (moats) have criss-crossed Antwerp ever since the Middle Ages. They supplied the city with drinking water and served as an inland port. Later on, the canals served as sewers and were eventually covered by vaulted structures, causing this unique piece of heritage to disappear from the cityscape – until now.
During the tour, you will discover old vaults, canals, bridges, sewers and locks. You can also listen to fascinating stories about Antwerp's distant past and recent history.
Guided or interactive walks
You can either set off with a guide or choose an interactive walk with tablet, supervised by a guide. That way, you will learn all about these hidden city passageways in the city in a light-hearted way.
