Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library

Can you smell the distinctive scent of old books as you stroll across Conscienceplein? The Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library has been storing books for more than five centuries. The absolute highlight is the prestigious Nottebohm Room.

Five centuries of heritage

The Heritage Library is a place of study and silence in the heart of the city. For more than five centuries, it has preserved cultural heritage. Want to learn more about the history of Antwerp and Flanders, as well as Dutch literature? In the reading room, you can browse the impressive collection, ranging from historical books right through to old newspapers and magazines.

Nottebohm Room

The main attraction of the Heritage Library is the Nottebohm Room. This prestigious library room holds the library's first 50,000 books in a breathtaking setting. The oldest item is not a book, but a three-thousand-year-old Egyptian papyrus. This fragile work lies safely tucked away in the dark. Other eye-catchers include Willem Janszoon Blaeu's nearly 400-year-old celestial and terrestrial globe. And the Egyptian cabinet, decorated with carved figures, is also an absolute masterpiece.

Conscienceplein

Also spend some time on Conscienceplein, named after the author Hendrik Conscience, aka the man who taught his people to read. This picturesque square has a southern feel, thanks to the Baroque Saint Charles Borromeo Church, the fountain and the large, shady lime tree. Also look closely at the ground and look for figures in the cobblestones. Keep your eyes open for fishes, hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades. Sit on a bench or terrace and enjoy.
