Vlaeykensgang

The picturesque Vlaeykensgang is a must-see. Step through the gate at Oude Koornmarkt, admire this medieval alley and be transported to another era.

Oasis of calm

The Vlaeykensgang dates back to the year 1591. You'll find it when you step through the gate at 16 Oude Koornmarkt. Take your time, because before you know it, you'll have reached the other side. The city's poorest people used to live here, along with the cobblers who were tasked to ring the emergency bell of the nearby cathedral. There were plans to demolish this medieval street in the 1960s, until antique dealer Axel Vervoordt bought the Vlaeykensgang and had it restored. Thanks to him, this alley is still an oasis of calm.

Restaurants and carillon concerts

Today you can find antique shops, art galleries and a few restaurants in the Vlaeykensgang. The traditional Sir Anthony van Dyck restaurant, with its beautiful Renaissance interior and fireplace, is a perfect fit for this alley. Restaurant, 't Hofke oozes a cosy, old-fashioned atmosphere. Besides being a beautiful setting for an intimate dinner, the Vlaeykensgang is also a popular place to come and listen to the summer carillon concerts.
