In the heart of Antwerp's fashion district, you will find the beautiful Saint Andrew's Church. There, you can admire beautiful baroque altars, works of art from the seventeenth century and a very special pulpit.
Sint-Andries (St. Andrew's)
The folksy St. Andrew's neighbourhood is known not only as Antwerp's fashion district, but also as the home of Saint Andrew's Church. The Augustinian Fathers built this church in the early sixteenth century and chose St. Andrew as their patron saint. The architectural style is late Gothic, with the exception of the superstructure and tower, which show characteristics of the late Baroque.
Exceptional interior
Step into the church and take your time exploring its extraordinary interior. Fascinated by the colourful stained glass windows? If so, you're in good company, because it is said that Vincent van Gogh also looked at them with gaping eyes. Other eye-catchers are the monument for Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland, the seventeenth-century high altar, the precious reliquary of the 36 Saints, and above all, a wonderful pulpit from 1821.
Treasury and Museum
In the church's treasury, you will discover how faith was lived in the church and in the neighbourhood. Admire numerous objects that played a role in celebrations, processions and in the worshipping of saints. And the small church museum bears testimony to the eventful social life in St. Andrew’s district.
Admission to the church is free, but to visit the treasury, a contribution of 1 euro is requested.
