Slightly concealed within the university neighbourhood, you will find the historic Saint James' Church, one of the largest churches in the city. Known as the starting point for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and for the burial chapel of Baroque painter Rubens.
Along the pilgrimage route
On the spot where the church now stands, there was a guest house in the early fifteenth century that received pilgrims from Northern Europe. In this shrine of St. James they found a resting place during their pilgrimage to the tomb of Apostle James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The foundation stone of the present church in Brabant Gothic style was laid in 1491; the church was completed just 175 years later.
Exceptional interior
Today, the church is a bit hidden in the lively Antwerp University neighbourhood, close to the famous shopping street the Meir. Step into the church and you immediately feel as if you are entering an extraordinary structure. A striking pulpit, beautiful stained glass windows, numerous statues of saints and paintings... you'll be nothing short of amazed. The classical music in the background only adds to the special atmosphere.
Rubens' burial chapel
Take your time on your visit, as there is a great deal to discover. The striking choir aisle, a top painting by Jacob Jordaens and, of course, the burial chapel of Rubens, a unique Baroque ensemble, at the back of the church. The altarpiece Madonna surrounded by Saints was created by Rubens himself. Note also the statue of the Virgin Mary, made by his pupil Lucas Faydherbe. The church also has one of the oldest working tower clocks.
