Saint Paul's Church

Saint Paul's Church

Between the historic centre and the Red-light District, you will find Saint Paul's Church. Admire numerous world-class works of art, magnificent Baroque altars and a hidden gem – the impressive Calvary garden.

The monastery church of the Dominicans

Close to the Scheldt, Saint Paul's Church arose in 1571 as part of a grand monastic complex belonging to the Dominicans. It is a Gothic structure, but the furniture and artworks are mainly seventeenth century Baroque. Today, the church is located between the historic centre and the Red-light District, near the pleasant Sint-Paulusplaats.

A superb interior

Take your time when visiting the church, as there is a lot to discover. Inside, for example, look at the beautiful interplay of light and space and the beautiful combination of sleek Gothic and opulent Baroque. Admire more than fifty paintings by famous Antwerp masters such as Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens. You should also make sure you do not miss the more than two hundred sculptures, the Baroque altars and the beautiful wood carvings. The impressive organ is also a European masterpiece.

The Calvary garden is a hidden gem

The highlight is the striking Calvary garden next to the church. This sculpture garden from the first half of the eighteenth century is one of the most picturesque corners of the city. Be amazed by 63 life-size sculptures and nine reliefs depicting, among other things, the resurrection of Jesus.
