Five different ways to discover Antwerp

Five different ways to discover Antwerp

Glide over the historic centre, float along the impressive harbour or wind your way through the underground canals of the city. You can do it all in Antwerp! That's why we selected five separate ways to explore the city.

From the air

From the panoramic roof of the MAS you have a beautiful view over the city and the port of Antwerp. In the evening, the roof is still accessible and you can enjoy the beautiful lights of the Scheldt. However, there is another way to discover Antwerp from above: experience the city from a hot air balloon and discover its remarkable situation along the Scheldt. The hot air balloons are accessible to young and old and along the way you get interesting information about the city and balloon rides. An unforgettable experience!!

Discover the various balloon voyages, departure points and times at www.cair-ballonvaart.be or www.bertelsballooning.be.

Underground

Not at all a fan of heights? Well, you can literally dive into the history of the city with a visit to Ruien Antwerp. This underground system of waterways dates from the Middle Ages and provided the city with water and an inland port. When the ruins later turned into overgrown sewers, they disappeared from the city's memory. Fortunately, they are now open to the public again. Follow a professional guide, take your chance with a tablet or explore it by boat. You are guaranteed to return with numerous interesting facts and mysterious anecdotes.

‘From the other side’

Antwerp is a city by the river: the Scheldt divides the city into two parts. Thanks to the Sint-Anna tunnel, or the ‘pedestrian tunnel’, the banks remain well connected. Walking or cycling through this 572 metre long tunnel is an experience in itself. Check out the wooden escalators, which were unique in Europe when they opened in 1933. Arriving on the Left Bank you can enjoy a beautiful view of the skyline of Antwerp. You will also find the beach of Sint-Anneke here. In the summer, it is one of the most popular spots for the locals of Antwerp, but in the winter you can also enjoy a bite and a drink there.

As a playground

In Antwerp you can shop in museums, have lunch in shoe shops and play golf in the city centre. With City Golf you can discover both the hotspots and some hidden spots in Antwerp while playing. This is a unique way to discover the city. Aim at a historical monument or a statue and the player who needs the least number of strokes is the winner. Want to enjoy a drink while there? Choose to play City Beer Golf and three delicious local beers from Antwerp will be included.

From the water

Unlike most seaports, the port of Antwerp (the second largest in Europe) is 80 km inland. During a visit to the city you will also taste the atmosphere of the port. A relaxing boat trip on the Scheldt and through the port, an exclusive cruise on the Eilandje (little island) or an adventurous trip at high speed? Discover all the possibilities in our article about boat trips in Antwerp.
