A 60-metre-high museum terrace, an 800-year-old castle or the world's first real stock exchange. Even on a low budget, you can see and do a lot in Antwerp. You can visit these architectural gems with a view free of charge.
Terraces and a tower with panoramic views
Antwerp is at your feet at these 3 view points. They are all less than a 25-minute walk from each other.
Het Steen
Antwerp's oldest building houses the official tourist information point, regional products and the 'The Antwerp Story' experience trail (entrance fee). Take the stairs to the roof terrace where you can enjoy the view of the Scheldt and the Historic centre.
Steenplein 1
MAS | Museum aan de Stroom
The 60-metre-tall MAS | Museum aan de stroom is one of Antwerp's most popular museums. While there is an entrance fee to visit the museum halls, the promenade and panoramic roof terrace are free of charge. Take the escalator up and discover Antwerp's rich history in the world and the world in Antwerp. On the 10th floor (accessible only by stairs), enjoy a 360-degree view of the city, the Scheldt and the port from the roof terrace.
Hanzestedenplaats 1
Red Star Line Museum
This museum tells the story of the millions of emigrants who migrated to the US and Canada on the ships of the Red Star Line shipping company between 1873 and 1934. The 3 historic harbour sheds that house the museum were carefully restored. You can visit the contemporary, 30-meter-high observation tower in the shape of a chimney for free by stairs or lift.
Montevideostraat 3
Architectural gems
No roof terraces, but also cutting-edge architecture, from neo-Gothic to neo-Futurism. These three buildings can also be entered free of charge.
Port House
This building is the headquarters of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Europe's second largest port after Rotterdam. The lower part is a former fire station in neo-traditional style. The neo-futurist upper part in the shape of a diamond ship was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. The Port House can only be visited with a guide, but the central entrance hall is freely accessible. You can take a breather in the café.
Stock Exchange
The first stock exchange specifically for trade dates back to 1531. The Stock Exchange thus became the model for later stock exchange buildings in Europe. After a fire, it was rebuilt in 1872 in opulent neo-Gothic style. You can visit the ground floor for free if there are no events taking place.
Borzestraat 31
Centraal Station
This 1905 railway 'cathedral' features in all lists of the most beautiful railway stations in the world. Centraal Station consists of a steel platform canopy and an eclectic-style stone station building. Architect Delacenserie was inspired, among other things, by the Pantheon in Rome.
